From 2005-2009 there was a whopping 55% increase in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among men, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While the jump in demand isn’t unique to the gender, it speaks to many men’s desire to boost their looks – often through treatments that don’t cause a lot of bruising or require lengthy recovery times. They’re exercising, have quit smoking and are eating more healthy foods. But men often say they don’t think they look as good as they feel.
Minimally invasive procedures for men
Most of our male patients at Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery and Spa Greystone are inspired by wives who have had successful procedures or are kind enough to ask why their husbands’ once-smooth brows now appear to look angry. The first question usually asked by men in our consultation room is, “how long before I can get back to the office?” For many of those patients, that means getting minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox, microdermabrasion or laser hair removal, the top three most popular among males last year.

Despite the rise of in-and-out procedures, cosmetic surgery procedures such as nose reshaping, hair transplantation and liposuction also remain popular among men. Hair Transplants have really been on the rise in our office and we are having phenomenal results! Men from 2- to 65 are candidates for a hair transplant. Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, usually starts with a receding hairline and thinning crown. Advances in plastic surgery have led to hair replacement techniques that are available for people who want to restore a fuller head of hair and a more youthful look.

SmartLipo is the answer for men who are uncomfortable with the thought of invasive procedures just to lose fat on targeted areas of their bodies. Only a tiny tube between 1-2 millimeters made of fiber optic is inserted into the skin, allowing the laser to penetrate and break up fat cells. Lasers are also beneficial in the sense that it promotes faster blood clotting which minimizes bruising.
Compared to the traditional form of liposuction, Smartlipo makes use of only a local anesthesia to numb the area being treated, compared to a general anesthesia for traditional liposuction. Patients are fully aware of what’s happening and what’s going on during the entire process. For those who would rather not be awake during surgery, we are happy to use general anesthesia.
