Hair Restoration Society Celebrates 20 Years of Progress
Advancements in Hair Transplant techniques attract more men and women with hair loss
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is highlighting important advances in the fight against hair loss as the society prepares for its 20th anniversary in October. Major strides have been made in the art and science of Hair Restoration Surgery since the ISHRS was founded in 1993. As a result, millions of men and women across the globe have a better head of hair to show for the tremendous growth in this specialized field.
According to the ISHRS, the number of men and women who pursue treatment for hair loss has increased tremendously since the society began compiling data in 2004. The number of surgical hair restoration procedures performed worldwide jumped 66% between 2004 and 2010, the society says.
The ISHRS has also reported big increases in hair restoration surgeries for women and the use of advancements in hair transplantation to restore non-scalp hair, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes and facial hair.
Follicular units revolutionize hair transplants
Perhaps the most notable contribution in the field of hair restoration in the last two decades is the use of follicular units in hair transplant surgeries. During the Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure, small bundles of one to four hair follicles are harvested from donor areas at the back or sides of the head and transplanted to bald or thinning areas.
One of the biggest complaints in the past was the appearance of visible plugs in the transplanted area. This unnatural result was due to a single graft containing 15 to 25 or more hairs being transplanted to the scalp in rows. In contrast, today’s Hair Transplants offer natural looking, virtually undetectable results. Since the grafts are so much smaller, they can be used to better imitate the manner in which hair grows naturally.
